SEXUAL ASSUALT NURSE EXAMINER (SANE)
Reports to: SANE Program Coordinator and/or Executive Director of the Victims Assistance Center of Jefferson County
Job Purpose: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault victim. This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE is expected to follow protocols established by the Medical Facility and/or management of the Victims Assistance Center for which the SANE is contracted.
SANE Qualifications:
· Current Registered Nurse (RN) /Medical Professional Licensure in New York State.
· Minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse/Medical Professional.
· Complete the SANE-A (Adolescent/Adult) training to become a SANE, along with clinical skills training and the required preceptorship within 6 months of hire (paid by the agency).
· Valid NYS Driver’s License and reliable form of transportation.
· Be able to administer medication both orally and intravenously.
· Be able to respond to crisis calls at Emergency Departments located in Samaritan Medical Center, Carthage Area Hospital, River Hospital, and Lewis County General Hospital within 1 hour.
· Commit to cover a minimum of four 12-hour paid on-call shifts per month, holiday coverage, and other scheduling requirements as determined by the SANE program and based on your availability.
· Maintain own malpractice insurance and provide updated documentation to the SANE Coordinator.
· Participate in professional development as determined by the SANE program, including quarterly staff meetings.
Job Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of a SANE Contractor shall include all of the following as required for the treatment of victims:
· Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate (compensated per exam).
· Utilizing the New York State Sexual Offense Evidence Collection Kit, Sexual Assault Examiners administer prophylaxis medications, and ensure the collection and preservation of DNA in accordance with the New York State Department of Health Protocol for the Acute Care of the Adult Patient Reporting Sexual Assault.
· Photograph victim injuries utilizing colposcope and digital camera.
· Maintain chain of custody for each sexual assault exam and adhere to evidence protocols.
· Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.
· Provide testimony as a fact witness to any/all cases performed when necessary (compensated per day).
· Participation in continuing education training in forensic procedures and related subjects as may be required by the SANE program (paid by the agency).
· Maintain competencies related to forensic nursing, pelvic exams, equipment skills and any new requirements of the current sexual assault exam guidelines (paid by the agency).
